Hub News: Four Reasons Why Swito Partnered with Global Shapers for Road to Ocean 18: Davao Indiepreneur Workshop

When our hub member, Arch. Henna Dazo, asked if we could help during the Road to Ocean 18 last Sept 21 event in Park Inn Davao City, we could not say NO. We were not particularly low of events to organize and attend, thanks to our ever-active corporate hub members’ timeline of activities, but what got us to agree to support Arch. Dazo was more than her membership to the Global Shapers Davao.

1. We Get to Provide a Space for Vibrant Conversation on The Meaning of “Indiepreneur”

So, the word “indiepreneur” isn’t popular among us businessmen in Davao yet, even for us who is in the incubation and maker-space industry. When this was opened up by the organizers, we got a little thrilled. During the roadshow, Winston Damarillo of Amihan said, “Never underestimate the simplicity of the mission,” which really encapsulated his talk on Global Strategies on Kickstarting Your Venture. The audience was able to hear about the six high-impact industries and how to kickstart their venture, which even for those who have established businesses, are important values to continue to be reminded of in the world of Individual Entrepreneurship.

2. We Get to Create Another Partnership with the Very Active Global Shapers of Davao Community

We very well remember when we pushed our Swito Hub members (at least the few under 30 years old) to become a member of Global Shapers Davao. Yana Santiago of Olivia and Diego was curator then, in 2017, and she was just so charismatic and genuine that we wanted our young teammates to be friends with her. We were so impressed with the vitality of their group. Our first partnership was during the Women’s Voices: Answering the Call for Just Peace, and with the same framework on entrepreneurship with a social mission, we continued to support their activities.

During the event, we were able to showcase two of the products owned and, some, distributed by Swito Innovation Hub, the Sagaya Peg Dolls of TaoTao Souvenirs, the Balay Balay Architecture Puzzles, and Swito Architecture Designs. TaoTao Souvenirs, run by Maria Lovella Naces, was one of the giveaways for the panel of speakers. Balay Balay Architecture Puzzles also put out their booth, and people played with the toys before the event began.

3. Indieprenuer Workshop

Swito Hub is big on having this network of entrepreneurs from the creative economy. That’s particularly the reason why we got involved with the British Council for the Creative Innovator’s Programme. We have also consistently collaborated with Google Business Group Davao for their ideation workshops like the Passion to Profit. So, when Oceans said that there was going to be a master class intended for “independent entrepreneurs” who has the potential to create change in their own industries, there was no way we could let this pass without assuring that our network of entrepreneur friends can join. The event was indeed busy with new ideas during the incubation, lectures, pitching and panel engagements.

3. We Get to Introduce Open Collaboration with East Asian Networks (OCEAN) to Davao Entrepreneurs

OCEAN stands for Open Collaboration with East Asian Networks. It is an alternative platform that sustains the World Economic Forum’s ASEAN discussions and agenda closer to the grassroots level. To be able to bring our challenges and successes from this side of the world to that arena of conversation, can be a big opportunity for Davao city. We were very lucky for the open ears coming from our distinguished panels. Yes, they had a lot to share that our participants can bring home with them to their own spaces, but they also, more importantly, listened to Davao’s voices and the unique experiences here that make entrepreneurs thrive in their own way.
